GOGAT主要存在于原核生物、酵母菌及高等植物非绿色组织的前质体中,和谷氨酰胺合成酶(GS)共同构成GS/GOGAT循环,参与氨同化的调控。
GOGAT以NADH为电子供体,催化谷氨酰胺的氨基转移到α-酮戊二酸形成两分子的谷氨酸,NADH在340nm吸光度的下降速率可以反映GOGAT活性大小。
